Steve Burns on Building No Tip’s Autonomous Food Delivery System

Food delivery is convenient, but that convenience often comes at a steep cost. A $30 restaurant order can approach $60 after platform markups, delivery charges, service fees, and tips.

Steve Burns, founder and chairman of No Tip, believes automation can reduce those costs while making delivery safer and more consistent.

His company is building a food delivery platform that combines a purpose-built electric road vehicle with a smaller autonomous robot that carries orders from the curb to the customer’s doorstep.

A Two-Stage Delivery System

Sidewalk robots already operate in some cities and college campuses, but Burns sees clear limitations in that model.

They move slowly, must navigate pedestrian traffic, and are not well suited for suburban areas where restaurants may be several miles away.

No Tip divides the delivery between two machines. The larger electric vehicle handles the road portion. Once it reaches the customer’s home, a ramp lowers and a smaller robot named Noah travels through the driveway or walkway to complete the delivery.

This allows the system to use existing roads for speed while preserving the doorstep convenience customers expect from traditional delivery apps.

Bringing Down the Cost

Burns began exploring the idea after seeing how much his own family was spending on food delivery.

The current system relies heavily on gig workers driving their own cars. Each driver brings different fuel costs, maintenance needs, insurance expenses, and levels of reliability. Those variables are ultimately reflected in the price paid by restaurants and customers.

No Tip plans to charge a flat $6 delivery fee with no tip and no restaurant markup.

Under that model, a $30 order would cost about $36 rather than doubling in price.

The economics could improve further as the technology becomes more autonomous. No Tip currently uses a human monitor in the road vehicle while Noah operates independently during the final portion of the trip. The long-term goal is to remove the driver once the vehicle and regulatory environment are ready.

A Robot Built for One Purpose

Noah is not designed to be a humanoid or general household robot. It has one job: carry a relatively small delivery from the vehicle to the door and return safely.

That narrow focus helps keep the machine affordable and reliable.

The robot uses cameras, lidar, sonar, GPS, and precision positioning technology to recognize pathways, avoid obstacles, locate the delivery point, and return to the vehicle.

Even a simple suburban property can create difficult challenges. Cars may block the driveway, toys or lawn equipment may sit in the walkway, and shadows can make it harder for the system to distinguish the edge of a path.

Each delivery gives the system more information. Over time, the goal is for Noah to assess unfamiliar properties and determine a safe route without requiring every doorstep to be mapped in advance.

Building at the Right Time

Burns has spent decades developing emerging technologies. He founded Workhorse, an early commercial electric vehicle company, and later founded Lordstown Motors, where he led the transformation of a former General Motors plant into an electric vehicle manufacturing facility.

Those experiences taught him that timing matters.

A company can arrive too early, before customers, technology, or regulators are ready. It can also arrive too late, after competitors have already established themselves.

Burns believes autonomous delivery is now reaching the right moment. Consumers are more familiar with robotaxis, driver-assistance systems, autonomous lawn equipment, and advanced robotics. Sensors that were once extremely expensive have also become more accessible.

No Tip can build on those advances without carrying the weight and complexity of a vehicle designed to transport passengers.

Starting in Mason, Ohio

The company selected Mason, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, as its first market.

The location reflects the suburban environment No Tip is designed to serve, and it keeps the first rollout close to the engineering team. When something needs to be adjusted, the people responsible for solving the problem are nearby.

Ohio weather also creates a useful testing environment. Snow, ice, and changing seasonal conditions are more demanding than the climate in many southern cities. If the system performs reliably there, future deployments may be easier.

More Than Restaurant Delivery

Food is the company’s starting point, but Burns sees a broader future.

The same system could eventually deliver groceries, prescriptions, auto parts, and other small local purchases. A quick trip for a gallon of milk, for example, carries hidden costs in time, fuel, vehicle wear, and risk.

No Tip’s planned three-wheeled electric vehicle is designed specifically for lightweight delivery rather than passengers. Burns estimates it could operate using about three cents of electricity per mile.

That efficiency could make local delivery practical for purchases that do not justify today’s high fees.

Automation and Safety

Burns also sees safety as an important benefit.

Delivery drivers frequently travel through unfamiliar neighborhoods while watching navigation systems and trying to complete orders quickly. After parking, they may face poor lighting, uneven walkways, pets, traffic, or confrontations at unfamiliar homes.

Automation removes people from many of those risks while creating a more consistent customer experience.

No Tip still has significant work ahead, particularly around autonomous road regulations and expansion into new cities. But after operating in stealth for roughly four years, Burns believes the company is ready to prove that lower-cost, robot-powered delivery can work beyond a controlled campus or downtown sidewalk.
