Phenomenex introduces Strata-Mag RP, a magnetic bead-based extraction technology designed to help clinical research laboratories automate and standardize sample preparation for LC-MS/MS workflows. The company says the product is intended to support improved efficiency, performance and scale in research laboratory processes, according to its product launch announcement.

The launch addresses a challenge Phenomenex identifies in traditional solid phase extraction, or SPE. The company says those workflows can require multiple processing steps, making them labor-intensive and difficult to automate. It also says they are susceptible to channeling and plugging.

How Introduces Strata-Mag RP Addresses Sample Preparation

Strata-Mag RP uses magnetic bead technology and is designed for automated sample preparation at scale. Phenomenex says the product eliminates the common issues it associates with traditional SPE while allowing laboratories to move from manual processing to fully automated workflows without changing the core chemistry.

The announcement describes the technology as combining automation-ready magnetic beads with consistent extraction performance. Phenomenex says that combination is intended to help laboratories scale sample preparation with greater confidence. The release does not provide comparative measurements or quantified performance results.

Eric Lavold, Phenomenex’s Vice President of Product Management and Strategy, said clinical research laboratories face growing pressure to deliver more testing capacity and faster turnaround times. He also cited a need for greater operational efficiency without compromising analytical quality.

“By creating a flexible path to automated sample preparation, Strata-Mag RP empowers scientists to increase throughput while maintaining confidence in the quality and consistency of their results that support critical clinical research decision-making,” Lavold said.

Phenomenex presents the product as a route from manual sample preparation to automated workflows. Its announcement says the transition can happen without changing the core chemistry, a point the company connects to laboratories seeking to scale their processes.

Automation and Clinical Research Workflows

The release frames the launch around the demands of clinical research workflows, including testing capacity, turnaround times and consistency. Phenomenex says the technology is designed to help laboratories automate and standardize preparation for LC-MS/MS workflows. The company describes its intended use as research laboratory support and labels the product “FOR RESEARCH USE ONLY. Not for use in clinical diagnostic procedures.”

Phenomenex says the product reflects its effort to address testing demands and support research and clinical workflows. The announcement does not specify a release date, price, instrument compatibility list, or numerical throughput target.

The launch fits into broader executive coverage of technology and organizational choices, including CEO reinvention priorities and biotech leadership decisions. It also relates to how leaders shape workplace priorities, a theme explored in CEO safety culture coverage.

Phenomenex is an operating company within Danaher’s Life Sciences platform, according to the announcement. The company describes itself as developing analytical chemistry solutions for separation and purification challenges across academic, pharmaceutical, biotech, environmental, clinical research, government and industrial laboratories.

The product’s stated next step is practical adoption by laboratories moving sample preparation toward automation. Phenomenex says Strata-Mag RP is designed to make that transition while retaining the existing core chemistry; laboratories must assess the offering within its research-only scope.
